Intellectual Property Rights

The laws in Sweden pertaining to Intellectual Property Rights has undergone many changes in the 1990's. Most of the changes have been in accordance with the European Unions directives following Swedens entry into the European Union.

The EU has done quite a bit on the topic of Intellectual Property Rights. Here is a link to a memo that aims to provide a harmonized and appropriate legal framework for copyright and related rights in the Information Society.

Intellectual property rights are protected by the TRIPs Agreement (Trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights). These include copyright and related rights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs and patents, semiconductor topography and undisclosed information, all of which play a fundamental role in highly industrialised societies like the European Union (EU). Sweden is one of the original backers of this agreement

The United Nations also has an organization dedicated to Intellectual Property, namely World Intellectual Property Organization. WIPO is responsible for the promotion of the protection of intellectual property throughout the world through cooperation among States, and for the administration of various multilateral treaties dealing with the legal and administrative aspects of intellectual property.
