Electronic Commerce

It started with a, not much noticed, suggestion in the 1994 spring budget. The core of the proposal was that the Swedish public sector should start implement Electronic Commerce with the aim to attain a more efficient public sector. The proposal was accepted and pre-study was completed the same year. The pre-study was presented early 1995 and recommended a "Yes" to Electronic
Commerce.

The introduction of electronic trading in the Swedish public sector will spread technology to small and medium-sized Swedish companies. In turn, this will make such companies more competitive in the European public procurement market, a market which today totals over MSEK (Million Swedish Crowns) 5,400  a year. The corresponding figure for Sweden is approximately MSEK 280, which is a significant proportion of the Swedish economy.

The Swedish Association of Local Authorities is responsible for the  co-ordination of the implementation of Electronic Commerce (EC) for the whole public sector (i.e. state agencies, county-administration, local authorities
and public owned companies.)

Posten (the Swedish Postal service) created a slide show to show what it is doing with E-commerce and paperless mail.
